Former Prime Minister
Yousuf Raza Gilani has announced his resignation as Leader of the Opposition in
the Senate
.

During a meeting of the
upper house on Monday, he said he had submitted his resignation to his
leadership
.

It should be noted that
Yousuf Raza Gilani was also facing criticism from his own party for his absence
from the Senate session on Friday. Due to the absence of opposition senators
during the meeting, the government had passed the SBP Amendment Bill despite
the opposition’s lead
.

After the passage of the
bill, Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry had sarcastically said,
“Thanks to Pakistan Peoples Party and Yousuf Raza Gilani for passing the
SBP Bill in the Senate because of them
.”

Addressing the Senate
session on Monday, Gilani said, “Ministers who leave one party for another
are saying that I helped the government
.”

He said he no longer
wanted to be the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate, which is why he had
tendered his resignation to the party leadership
.

How the bill was passed
despite the opposition having a majority in the Senate

This issue is important
because the opposition parties in Pakistan have in various statements spoken
against the increase in taxes, the resulting inflation and the SBP Amendment
Bill under the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
.

This was the best opportunity
for the opposition to reject the government’s efforts in the Senate, where they
have 57 out of 99 seats. But eight senators (two from the PPP and six from the
PDM) were absent from the crucial meeting, and in the final count the
government won by just one vote
.

Pakistan Peoples Party
Senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar that the opposition had
guessed that the IMF would discuss the issue of release of funds to Pakistan on
February 2. According to him, the reforms proposed by the IMF, including the
State Bank of Pakistan Amendment Bill and the mini-budget, will also be passed
as soon as possible
.

We knew in that look that the bill
could come at any time,” he said. Two weeks ago, he sent the bill to all
members of the Senate. When the Senate adjourned on January 25 to meet again on
Friday, we (the opposition members) were 90 percent sure that the bill would
come on Friday because there is no date left after that
.

The question now is how
the bill was passed despite a majority of opposition leaders in the Senate
.

Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar
had said that “the reason is that the opposition members do not trust each
other, there is no harmony, if we are on the same page then we should not face
such a situation
.”

He had said that at the
moment the opposition is facing to save its reputation, the government is not
working, similarly the impression is being created that the opposition is also
not working
.

Absence of opposition
senators in Senate session under discussion

The opposition had 57
members out of a total of 99 in the Senate, which they could use to block the
passage of the bill, as they have claimed many times before
.

An example of the
government’s haste was that Dr. Zarqa Suhrawardy of the Pakistan
Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was summoned to the Senate in a wheelchair wearing an
oxygen mask despite being coded for fear that the numbers would not be
completed
.

Surprisingly, eight
members of the Senate, including opposition leader Yousuf Raza Gilani, were
absent. Earlier, the Dilawar Khan group, which had made Yousuf Raza Gilani the
Leader of the Opposition, gave four votes to the government
.

During this time, there
was an occasion when the number of votes between the government and the
opposition was equal to 43. In such a situation, the chairman of the senate has
the right to vote, using which the chairman of the senate Sadiq Sanjarani voted
for the government
.

Meanwhile, during this
important phase of voting, Awami National Party Senator Omar Farooq Kasi got up
from his seat and walked out. After which the voting was completed and the
opposition could not stop the SBP from passing the amendment bill despite
having an overwhelming majority
.

In the opposition’s statement, it was
a matter of national security, more important than private affairs
.”

Talking about the
absence of Yousuf Raza Gilani, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar said that Yousuf Raza
Sahib is the Leader of the Opposition. I think they should have been in the
Senate. Private engagements will certainly be important to them, but in the
opposition’s statement it was an issue of national security. And private
engagements don’t matter to him
.

Talking about the
absence of members of other parties, he said that some members had important
issues
.

Like PPP’s Sikandar Mahendra is going
to the US for cancer treatment. Nazhat Sadiq has been coded in Canada, Mushahid
Hussain has also been coded
.

If our servants had been perfect, we
would not have faced this situation,” he said
.

There is no difference between Imran
Khan and the opposition
.”

Journalist Hamid Mir
disagrees, saying that what happened in the Senate was “deliberate
planning
.”

Opposition parties are no longer
worried about losing their confidence,” he said. In my view, there is no
difference between Imran Khan and the opposition
.
