Karachi Commissioner Muhammad Saleem Rajput on Saturday ordered expediting the crackdown against profiteers, after which several shopkeepers and roadside vendors were fined hefty sums.

According to a statement issued from the commissioner’s office, various assistant commissioners (ACs) conducted operations against violations of the government-set rates of consumer products.

Gulberg AC Hassan Zafar fined some vegetable sellers for violations of government rates and personally oversaw the sale of vegetables at official rates in the market within his jurisdiction. The Arambagh AC sealed a medical store for selling medicines at inflated prices, while ACs of Mominabad, Nazimabad, Ibrahim Hyderi and Gulshan-e-Iqbal imposed fines on profiteering, and shut down several shops. The statement read that a cumulative fine of Rs845,500 was imposed on 125 shops, and 15 shops were sealed.
